L.B. Abbott was born on June 13, 1908 in Pasadena, California. He was the son of a prominent banker and real estate investor. He attended the University of Southern California, where he studied cinematography. After graduating, he worked as a camera assistant for several studios, including MGM and Paramount. In the 1930s, Abbott began working as a cinematographer on feature films. He worked on films such as The Thin Man (1934), The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1938), and The Wizard of Oz (1939). He also worked on several television series, including The Lone Ranger (1949-1957) and The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin (1954-1959). In the 1950s, Abbott began working as a director of photography on television series, including The Adventures of Superman (1952-1958) and The Rifleman (1958-1963). He also worked on several feature films, including The Magnificent Seven (1960) and The Great Escape (1963). Throughout his career, Abbott earned numerous awards and nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography for The Great Escape. He was also inducted into the American Society of Cinematographers Hall of Fame in 1989. L.B. Abbott passed away on April 15, 1998 in Los Angeles, California. He was 89 years old.
