Larry Christiansen is an American chess grandmaster and three-time United States Chess Champion. He was born on June 27, 1956 in Riverside, California. He is currently 68 years old. Christiansen began playing chess at the age of nine and won the California Junior Championship at the age of twelve. He was awarded the title of International Master in 1975 and the title of Grandmaster in 1980. Christiansen has won the U.S. Chess Championship three times, in 1980, 1981, and 1983. He has also won the U.S. Open Chess Championship twice, in 1979 and 1982. He has represented the United States in numerous international chess tournaments, including the Chess Olympiad and the World Team Championship. Christiansen has written several books on chess, including "Chess Openings for White, Explained" and "Chess Openings for Black, Explained". He is also a chess columnist for Chess Life magazine. Christiansen is currently unmarried and does not have any children.

Christiansen grew up in Riverside, California, United States. In 1971, he became the first junior high school student to win the National High School Championship. He went on to win three invitational U.S. Junior Championships in 1973, 1974, and 1975. In 1977, at age 21, he became a grandmaster without first having been an international master. Christiansen tied for first place with Anatoly Karpov at Linares 1981. He won the 2001 Canadian Open Chess Championship. He also won Curaçao 2008 and the Bermuda Open 2011.
