Kessel was a member of the United States women's national volleyball team from 1975 to 1984. She was a member of the team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Kessel attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where she was a member of the UCLA Bruins women's volleyball team. She was a three-time All-American and was named the Most Valuable Player of the 1975 NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship. Kessel is currently the head coach of the women's volleyball team at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has been the head coach since the 2002 season.
