She attended the University of Toronto, where she studied English and philosophy. After graduating, she began her career in journalism, working as a reporter for the Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail. In the early 1980s, Brown began working in radio, hosting a show on CBC Radio One. She then moved to television, hosting the CBC program The Passionate Eye from 1988 to 1992. In 2007, she returned to radio, hosting the popular CBC Radio One show Q. Brown has also written several books, including a memoir, The Long Walk Home (2009).
