Lawrence Sigmund Bittaker is an American serial killer and rapist who, along with his partner Roy Norris, kidnapped, raped, tortured, and murdered five young women in California in 1979. He was sentenced to death in 1981 and is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison. Bittaker was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 27, 1940. He was the son of a steelworker and had a troubled childhood. He was expelled from school for fighting and was sent to a juvenile detention center. He was later arrested for burglary and served time in prison. After his release, Bittaker moved to California and worked as a machinist. In 1979, he met Roy Norris, a former Marine, and the two began a crime spree that would last for five months. During this time, they kidnapped, raped, tortured, and murdered five young women. Bittaker was arrested in November 1979 and was sentenced to death in 1981. Bittaker is currently on death row at San Quentin State Prison. He has been denied parole numerous times and is not eligible for parole until 2039.
