Lawrence Stenhouse was a British educationalist and professor of education at the University of Edinburgh. He was born on 29 March 1926 in London, England. Stenhouse was educated at the University of London, where he received a B.A. in English in 1948 and a Ph.D. in Education in 1954. He then went on to teach at the University of London Institute of Education, where he was appointed professor of education in 1965. Stenhouse was a major figure in the development of educational theory and practice in the United Kingdom. He was a proponent of the "learning-centered" approach to education, which emphasized the importance of the learner in the educational process. He was also a major contributor to the development of the National Curriculum in the United Kingdom. Stenhouse was the author of several books, including The Art of Educational Evaluation (1975), The Meaning of Educational Change (1976), and The Professional Educator (1978). He was also a frequent contributor to educational journals and magazines. Stenhouse died on 28 April 2002 at the age of 76.
