Lee Teng-hui is a Taiwanese politician who served as the President of the Republic of China from 1988 to 2000. He was the first native Taiwanese to hold the office. He was born in Sanshi Village, Taihoku Prefecture, Taiwan, on 15 January 1923. Lee Teng-hui studied at Kyoto Imperial University in Japan and later at Cornell University in the United States, where he earned a Ph.D. in agricultural economics. He returned to Taiwan in 1952 and joined the Kuomintang (KMT) party. He rose through the ranks of the KMT and was appointed vice president in 1984. In 1988, Lee Teng-hui was elected president of the Republic of China. During his tenure, he implemented a number of reforms, including the introduction of direct presidential elections in 1996. He also sought to improve relations with mainland China and the United States. Lee Teng-hui retired from politics in 2000 and has since been involved in various social and political activities. He is currently estimated to have a net worth of $2 million.
