Leigh Atkinson is an English swimmer who was born on 10 June, 1958 in English. He is a former world record holder in the 200m butterfly and a two-time Olympic medalist. He won a gold medal in the 200m butterfly at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and a bronze medal in the same event at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Atkinson began swimming at the age of nine and was soon competing in national competitions. He was a member of the British team at the 1978 World Championships and the 1979 European Championships. He won his first international medal, a bronze, at the 1981 European Championships. Atkinson won his first world record in the 200m butterfly in 1982 and went on to win the gold medal in the event at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He also won a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Atkinson retired from competitive swimming in 1989 and has since worked as a swimming coach. He is currently the head coach of the City of Leeds Swimming Club. Atkinson is married to former swimmer and coach, Sue Atkinson. They have two children.
