He was a member of the Norwegian Parliament from 1973 to 1989, representing the Conservative Party. He served as Minister of Fisheries from 1981 to 1986. Blakset has been a member of several boards and committees, including the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, the Norwegian Institute of Fisheries and Marine Research, and the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research.
