Leland B. Yeager is an American economist and professor emeritus at the University of Virginia. He is best known for his contributions to the field of international economics, particularly in the areas of international trade and finance. He is also a noted scholar of the Austrian School of economics. Yeager was born in Oak Park, Illinois, and received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1945. He then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1945 to 1947. After his military service, he returned to the University of Chicago, where he earned his M.A. in 1948 and his Ph.D. in 1951. Yeager began his academic career at the University of Virginia in 1951, where he served as a professor of economics until his retirement in 1991. During his tenure at the University of Virginia, he served as the chairman of the Department of Economics from 1965 to 1968 and as the director of the Thomas Jefferson Center for Studies in Political Economy from 1968 to 1971. Yeager has written extensively on international economics, including books such as International Economics (1962), International Monetary Relations (1966), and International Trade and Finance (1972). He has also served as a consultant to the U.S. government and various international organizations. Yeager is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society and the American Economic Association. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Distinguished Fellow Award from the American Economic Association in 1991 and the Adam Smith Award from the Mont Pelerin Society in 1994.

The month before his death Yeager wrote about the "destructive and ignorant" trade policy of United States President Donald Trump. Yeager died in April 2018 at the age of 93.

1989

His subsequent writings tilted towards a laissez-faire approach to monetary reform. In his 1989 paper "Can Monetary Disequilibrium Be Eliminated", he advocated that government "be banished from any role in the monetary system other than that of defining a unit of account or numeraire." Yeager argued in favor of constitutional monarchy.

1956

He was a Professor Emeritus at both Auburn University and the University of Virginia. His monetary writings have strongly opposed Keynesian orthodoxy and have emphasized the crucial role of money in business cycles. His 1956 essay, "A Cash-Balance Interpretation of Depression" maintained that depression was caused by "an excess demand for money, in the sense that people want to hold more money than exists." In this, he was a member of the monetarist school exemplified by Milton Friedman.

1948

Yeager graduated from Oberlin College in 1948 with an A.B. and was granted an M.A. from Columbia University in 1949 and a Ph.D. from there in 1952. He had previously served in the United States Army in World War II, translating Japanese codes. He temporarily served as the Vice President of the Interlingua Institute from 1997 to 1998 after Deanna Hammond died. He has been a regular contributor to Liberty magazine and an occasional contributor to the "Mises Daily".
