Kiely began his career in the restaurant industry in the 1970s, working for the Marriott Corporation. He then joined Dunkin' Donuts in 1982, and rose through the ranks to become CEO in 2003. During his tenure, he oversaw the company's expansion into international markets, and the launch of the Dunkin' Donuts mobile app. Kiely retired from Dunkin' Brands in 2018. He currently serves on the board of directors of the National Restaurant Association. Kiely has an estimated net worth of $50 million.

After his re-election in 2005 he was appointed Deputy Speaker, but stood down in July 2006 after a sexual harassment incident. He was appointed Minister for Natural Resources, Environment and Heritage and Minister for Parks and Wildlife in November 2007. In 2008 he was defeated by CLP candidate Peter Styles.
