Leon Shamroy was an American cinematographer who worked on over 130 films and television shows during his career. He was nominated for four Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, winning for his work on the film Cleopatra in 1963. He was also nominated for two Emmy Awards for his work on the television series The Virginian. Shamroy was born in New York City in 1901. He began his career in the film industry in the 1920s, working as a camera assistant and then as a cinematographer. He worked on a variety of films, including The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), The Snake Pit (1948), and The Robe (1953). In 1963, Shamroy won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the film Cleopatra. He was also nominated for three other Academy Awards for his work on the films The King and I (1956), The Longest Day (1962), and The Sound of Music (1965). In addition to his work in film, Shamroy also worked on a number of television shows, including The Virginian, for which he was nominated for two Emmy Awards. He also worked on the television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Wild Wild West. Shamroy died in 1974 at the age of 73.
