Leonel de Moura Brizola was a Brazilian politician and lawyer who served as the Governor of Rio Grande do Sul from 1983 to 1987 and from 1991 to 1995. He was a leader of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) and a prominent figure in the Brazilian left-wing. Brizola was born in Carazinho, Rio Grande do Sul, on 22 January 1922. He studied law at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and was a professor of constitutional law at the same university. In 1945, he joined the Brazilian Labour Party (PTB) and was elected to the Rio Grande do Sul state legislature in 1947. He was elected to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies in 1950 and served until 1954. In 1959, he was elected to the Rio Grande do Sul state legislature and served until 1962. In 1962, he was elected to the Brazilian Senate and served until 1966. In 1966, he was elected Governor of Rio Grande do Sul and served until 1969. In 1969, he was elected to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies and served until 1974. In 1974, he was elected to the Rio Grande do Sul state legislature and served until 1978. In 1978, he was elected to the Brazilian Senate and served until 1982. In 1983, he was elected Governor of Rio Grande do Sul and served until 1987. In 1991, he was re-elected Governor of Rio Grande do Sul and served until 1995. Brizola was a prominent figure in the Brazilian left-wing and was a leader of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB). He died on 24 June 2004 in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul.
