Lewis G. Watkins was an American civil rights leader and educator. He was born in Seneca, South Carolina, and attended the segregated public schools of Oconee County. He graduated from Clemson University in 1948 with a degree in agricultural education. Watkins was a leader in the civil rights movement in South Carolina. He was a founding member of the South Carolina Council on Human Relations, which was established in 1957 to promote racial equality in the state. He was also a founding member of the South Carolina NAACP and served as its president from 1959 to 1961. Watkins was a teacher and principal in the Oconee County public schools from 1948 to 1965. He was also a professor of education at South Carolina State College from 1965 to 1972. Watkins was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1972 to 1974. He was also a member of the South Carolina Senate from 1974 to 1978. Watkins was a member of the South Carolina Board of Education from 1978 to 1982. He was also a member of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education from 1982 to 1988. Watkins was a recipient of the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor in South Carolina. He was also a recipient of the NAACP's Spingarn Medal in 1965. Watkins died on October 15, 1988, at the age of 63.

He sacrificed his life to save the lives of fellow Marines under his command and to contribute to the success of his unit's mission during the First Battle of the Hook in the Korean War. For his actions on October 7, 1952, Watkins posthumously received the Medal of Honor.

On October 7, 1952, Sergeant Watkins' platoon was assigned to retake an outpost from the enemy. Although wounded in the fight, he placed automatic fire on the enemy machine gun position holding up the assault. When an enemy grenade landed among his men, he shoved them aside, picked up the grenade, and attempted to throw it at the enemy. The grenade exploded in his hand and wounded him mortally.

Lewis Watkins was born on June 6, 1925, in Seneca, South Carolina. He graduated from Greenville High School, South Carolina in 1949. He was a member of the Greenville Police Department when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on September 12, 1950. After training at Parris Island, South Carolina. He served at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Camp Pendleton, California before being deployed to Korea.
