She graduated from the Beijing Broadcasting Institute in 1979 and began working as a journalist for the Beijing Daily. In 1989, she was one of the first journalists to report on the student protests in Tiananmen Square. She was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for her involvement in the protests. After her release from prison, Liao continued to work as a journalist and activist. She has written extensively about human rights and democracy in China, and has been a vocal critic of the Chinese government. She has also been involved in a number of human rights organizations, including the Chinese Human Rights Defenders and the Chinese Human Rights Lawyers Group. Liao is currently living in Beijing, where she continues to work as a journalist and activist. She is 66 years old.
