He studied acting at the Escuela de Arte Dramático in Caracas and began his career in the theater. He made his film debut in 1969 with the film La Noche de los Mayas. He has since appeared in numerous films and television series, including El Hombre de la Isla (1973), El Poder de la Palabra (1975), and El Amor de los Amores (1977). Abreu has been married twice. His first marriage was to actress María Antonieta Pons in 1971. The couple had two children, Luis and María. His second marriage was to actress María Conchita Alonso in 1982.
