M Shanmugavel was an Indian politician and social worker who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu from 1952 to 1967. He was born on 4 July 1927 in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. He was educated at the Madras Christian College and the University of Madras. He was a member of the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Tirunelveli in 1952. He served as a minister in the cabinet of C. N. Annadurai from 1967 to 1969. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1970 to 1976. M Shanmugavel was a social worker and was involved in various social activities. He was the founder of the Tirunelveli District Co-operative Bank and the Tirunelveli District Co-operative Milk Producers Union. He was also the founder of the Tirunelveli District Co-operative Sugar Mills. M Shanmugavel passed away on 28 August 2020 at the age of 96. He was survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.
