Magdi Yacoub is an Egyptian-British cardiothoracic surgeon, scientist, and professor of cardiothoracic surgery at Imperial College London. He is best known for his pioneering work in heart and lung transplantation, and for his work in the field of stem cell research. Yacoub was born in Cairo, Egypt, and studied medicine at Cairo University. He moved to the United Kingdom in 1962, and completed his medical training at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. He was appointed professor of cardiothoracic surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London in 1985, and was knighted in 1992. Yacoub has been involved in numerous research projects, including the development of a new technique for heart transplantation, and the use of stem cells to repair damaged heart tissue. He has also been involved in the development of artificial heart valves, and has been a leader in the field of tissue engineering. Yacoub is the founder of the Magdi Yacoub Institute for Research and Innovation, which is dedicated to the advancement of medical research and innovation. He is also the founder of the charity Chain of Hope, which provides medical care to children in developing countries.
