Born on March 15, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Russian immigrants. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned a degree in English literature. After college, she moved to New York City and began her career in publishing. In the 1950s, she began working as an editor at the New York Times Magazine, where she worked for over two decades. During her time at the magazine, she edited some of the most influential writers of the time, including Norman Mailer, Joan Didion, and Truman Capote. In addition to her work at the New York Times Magazine, Lettvin also wrote several books, including The New York Times Magazine Cookbook (1974) and The New York Times Magazine Guide to Entertaining (1977). In her later years, Lettvin continued to write and edit, and she also served as a mentor to many young writers. She passed away on April 8, 2021 at the age of 96.
