She is currently the director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Williams was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up in the nearby town of Independence. She attended the University of Missouri, where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1976. After the election, she served as the White House Deputy Chief of Staff from 1993 to 1997. In 1997, she was appointed as the White House Chief of Staff to First Lady Hillary Clinton, a position she held until 1998. In 1999, Williams joined the consulting firm of Dewey Square Group, where she served as a senior advisor until 2003. She then joined the consulting firm of Hilltop Public Solutions, where she served as a senior advisor until 2007. In 2008, Williams joined the Obama presidential campaign, where she served as the campaign's director of scheduling and advance. After the election, she served as the White House Deputy Chief of Staff from 2009 to 2011. In 2011, Williams joined the consulting firm of Teneo Strategy, where she served as a senior advisor until 2013. She then joined the consulting firm of The Glover Park Group, where she served as a senior advisor until 2015. In 2015, Williams joined the Institute of Politics at Harvard University's John F.
