Malachi Favors was an American jazz bassist, composer, and bandleader. He was a founding member of the influential avant-garde jazz group the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Favors was born in Chicago, Illinois, and began playing bass in the late 1940s. He was a member of the Sun Ra Arkestra from 1956 to 1962, and then joined the Art Ensemble of Chicago in 1967. He was a major contributor to the group's sound, playing both acoustic and electric bass. He also wrote many of the group's compositions. Favors released several solo albums, including Magestic Force (1975), Live at the River East Art Center (1995), and Live at the Velvet Lounge (1998). He also collaborated with other musicians, including Don Pullen, Lester Bowie, and Roscoe Mitchell. Favors died in 2004 at the age of 77. He was posthumously inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2006.
