He was a major figure in the Algerian literary scene and was known for his works on the Algerian War of Independence. He was also a professor of literature at the University of Algiers. Alloula wrote several books, including The Colonial Harem, which was published in 1986 and is considered one of his most important works. The book is a collection of photographs taken by French colonialists of Algerian women in the 19th century. Alloula's work was seen as a critique of the French colonial system and its effects on Algerian women. Alloula also wrote several plays, including The Night of the Generals, which was performed in Algiers in 1965. He also wrote several novels, including The Last of the Just, which was published in 1967. Alloula died in 2017 at the age of 94. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
