Manfred Dobin was a Soviet engineer and inventor who was born on 10 September 1925 in Oryol, Russia. He was best known for his invention of the Dobin-Mikhelson-Kuznetsov (DMK) engine, which was used in the Soviet space program. Dobin graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1950 and went on to work at the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM). He was the head of the CIAM's department of gas turbine engines from 1956 to 1965. In 1965, Dobin and his colleagues developed the DMK engine, which was used in the Soviet space program. The engine was used in the Soyuz spacecraft, the Buran space shuttle, and the Proton rocket. Dobin was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1971 for his work on the DMK engine. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour in 1975. Dobin died on 28 April, 2016 at the age of 90.
