Mani Kaul was an Indian filmmaker and actor who was known for his experimental and unconventional films. He was born in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India, on 25 December 1944. He studied at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, and later at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kaul's first feature film, Uski Roti (1969), was critically acclaimed and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film. He went on to make several other films, including Duvidha (1973), Ashad Ka Ek Din (1981), and Siddheshwari (1989). He also wrote and directed television serials, including the popular series, Kirdaar (1993). Kaul was a recipient of the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in 1992. He passed away on 6 July 2011, at the age of 66.
