Marcus Hanna was an American businessman and politician who served as a United States Senator from Ohio from 1897 to 1904. He was a close friend and political ally of President William McKinley and a major force in the Republican Party in the late 19th century. Hanna was born in New Lisbon, Ohio, on September 24, 1837. He was the son of Dr. Leonard and Samantha (Converse) Hanna. He attended Western Reserve College in Hudson, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Michigan in 1859. Hanna began his career as a clerk in a dry goods store in Cleveland, Ohio. He eventually became a partner in the firm of Rhodes & Co., a major iron and steel producer. He also became involved in banking and real estate. Hanna was active in politics and was a major supporter of William McKinley's presidential campaign in 1896. He was elected to the United States Senate in 1897 and served until 1904. During his tenure, he was a strong advocate of the gold standard and a vocal opponent of the free silver movement. Hanna was a major force in the Republican Party and was widely considered to be one of the most powerful men in the country. He died in 1904 at the age of 66.
