Sarstrand began playing tennis at the age of seven and went on to become one of the top junior players in Sweden. He won the Swedish Junior Championships in 1996 and 1997. He turned professional in 1998 and reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 97 in the world in 2000. Sarstrand has won two ATP Challenger titles in his career, both in doubles. He also reached the quarterfinals of the 2000 Stockholm Open and the 2001 Swedish Open. Sarstrand retired from professional tennis in 2003 and is now a tennis coach. It was Sarstrand's first year as a professional player and he was making his debut in an ATP Tour main draw. He was eliminated in the second round by Patrik Fredriksson.
