In January 2019, she was elected as Secretary of the Michigan State Senate, only the 2nd woman to have held that post. She is the 4th person from Kalamazoo County to hold this position.
In 2018, she lost to Democratic Party nominee Sean McCann for the 20th district in the Michigan Senate.
In 2014, O'Brien ran against and defeated Democratic Party nominee Sean McCann and Libertarian Party nominee Lorence Wenke for the 20th district seat in the Michigan Senate.
Born at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo County, O'Brien's family goes back to some of the early founding families of the area including the families of Bronson and Harris. Hope Cemetery in Texas Township is the final resting place for at least 6 generations of ancestors. Her childhood was spent on dairy farms with her 3 brothers (2 older and 1 younger) and her parents Richard and Katheleen (Crawford) Wilson, first in Pavilion Township (the Briggs dairy farm) and then in Texas Township (the Hiestand Dairy farm). While she first attended Vicksburg Schools (Fulton and Indian Lake Elementary Schools), O'Brien graduated from Mattawan High School in 1991 where she excelled in Track and Field and Cross Country. The Women's Track Record for the 3200 meter relay, set in 1991, is still held today by O'Brien and her teammates. O'Brien has a bachelor's degree in International Relations from James Madison College at Michigan State University. Prior to her election to the state house in 2010, she served as a real estate agent at RE/MAX Advantage and served on the Portage City Council from 2003-2010. From 1995-2003, she worked as a social worker with Catholic Family Services. She lives in Portage with her husband and four children.
