Mariano Azuela was a Mexican novelist and physician best known for his novel The Underdogs, which is considered one of the first and most important works of the Mexican Revolution. He was born on January 1, 1873 in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico. He studied medicine at the University of Guadalajara and graduated in 1898. Azuela began writing in the early 1900s and published his first novel, Los de abajo (The Underdogs), in 1915. The novel is based on his experiences as a doctor during the Mexican Revolution and is considered one of the first and most important works of the Mexican Revolution. He went on to write several other novels, including La Malhora (The Evil Hour), La Valentina (Valentina), and El desquite (The Revenge). Azuela was a member of the Mexican Academy of Language and was awarded the National Prize for Literature in 1950. He died on March 1, 1952 in Mexico City.
