Marshall Barer was an American lyricist and composer. He was born in Astoria, New York, and attended the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan. He began writing songs in the 1940s, and his first hit was "The Ugly Duckling" in 1949. He went on to write the lyrics for many Broadway musicals, including "Once Upon a Mattress," "The Fantasticks," and "The Apple Tree." He also wrote the lyrics for the popular children's song "Itsy Bitsy Spider." Barer was nominated for two Tony Awards for Best Original Score for "Once Upon a Mattress" and "The Apple Tree." He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song for "The Ugly Duckling." Barer died in New York City on October 28, 2010, at the age of 87.
