Marshall Kirk McKusick is an American computer scientist and author. He is best known for his work on the BSD operating system, particularly FreeBSD, and for his books on the subject. He is currently a consulting professor at the University of California, Berkeley. McKusick was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and grew up in the nearby town of Newark. He attended the University of Delaware, where he received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1976. He then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he received an M.S. in Computer Science in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1982. McKusick has worked on the BSD operating system since 1978, when he joined the Computer Systems Research Group at Berkeley. He was the lead architect of the 4.4BSD-Lite release of the BSD operating system, and was the chief architect of the FreeBSD project from its inception in 1993 until his retirement in 2005. He is also the author of several books on the subject, including The Design and Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System and The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System. McKusick is a Fellow of the USENIX Association and a member of the ACM. He was awarded the USENIX Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. He is also a member of the Internet Hall of Fame.
