Martin Nag is a Norwegian historian and professor emeritus at the University of Oslo. He was born on 30 July 1927 in Stavanger, Norway. He is 88 years old. Nag received his PhD in history from the University of Oslo in 1962. He has since held various positions at the university, including professor of history from 1975 to 1997. He has also held visiting positions at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Michigan. Nag has written extensively on the history of Norway and Scandinavia, and has published several books on the subject. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He was a specialist on Slavic literature, and has translated Russian, Bulgarian and Czech literature into Norwegian language. Among his books are Uro, Rød lørdag from 1976 and Steingjerde from 1991. He has published works on Norwegian writers, such as Knut Hamsun, Sigbjørn Obstfelder, Rudolf Nilsen, Nordahl Grieg and Alexander Kielland, as well as Russian writers, including Dostoyevsky, Turgenev and Tolstoy. Not appointed to the academic position he desired, he was nonetheless a government scholar from 1987.
