He is best known for winning the European Lightweight Championship in 1951. Tammelin began his professional boxing career in 1947 and won his first fight against Jorma Kontio. He went on to win his next five fights, including a victory over the reigning European Lightweight Champion, Jorma Kontio. In 1951, he won the European Lightweight Championship by defeating the Italian boxer, Giuseppe Marzotto. Tammelin went on to fight in several more bouts, including a fight against the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson in 1954. He lost the fight by a unanimous decision. He retired from boxing in 1957 with a record of 33 wins, 8 losses, and 1 draw. Tammelin is 72 years old as of 2020.
