Maurizio Gasparri is an Italian politician and former journalist who has been a member of the Italian Senate since 1994. He was born on 18 July 1956 in Rome, Italy. He is a member of the centre-right party Forza Italia. Gasparri graduated from the University of Rome La Sapienza in 1979 with a degree in political science. He began his career as a journalist, working for the Italian newspaper Il Tempo from 1979 to 1994. In 1994, Gasparri was elected to the Italian Senate, where he has served ever since. He has held several positions in the Italian government, including Minister of Communications from 2001 to 2006 and Minister of Transport from 2006 to 2008. Gasparri is married and has two children. In the wake of Barack Obama's election in November 2008, Gasparri declared on RAI that "with Obama in the White House, perhaps al-Qaeda is happier". Gasparri was heavily criticized for the declaration by the Italian Democratic Party.

2006

Following a weak showing in the regional elections of 2005, Gasparri was on 25 April 2006 replaced in Berlusconi's third Cabinet by Mario Landolfi.

2001

Gasparri was member of the Italian Social Movement and National Alliance. During the course of his career he has served as Minister of Communications (2001 to 2005 in the Berlusconi II Cabinet). It was during his time in this role that he pushed for the law known popularly as the "legge Gasparri". In the XVI legislature he is the president of the senators of The People of Freedom.
