Mehdi Hassan was a Pakistani ghazal singer and playback singer for Lollywood. He was famously known as the "King of Ghazal" and was considered one of the greatest and most influential figures in the history of ghazal singing. He was awarded the President's Pride of Performance and the Hilal-e-Imtiaz awards by the Government of Pakistan. Mehdi Hassan was born in a family of traditional musicians in Luna, Rajasthan, British India. He was the eldest of nine siblings. He received his early education in Luna and later moved to Karachi, Pakistan, where he studied at the Government College of Karachi. Mehdi Hassan began his singing career in the 1950s and soon became one of the most popular ghazal singers in Pakistan. He was known for his unique style of singing and his ability to convey emotion through his voice. He was also known for his ability to sing in different languages, including Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, and Pashto. Mehdi Hassan was also a successful playback singer for Lollywood, having sung for many films. He was also a successful composer and music director. He composed music for many films, including the classic film, Mere Apne. Mehdi Hassan passed away on 13 June 2012 in Karachi, Pakistan. He was 84 years old.
