Baker began his career in the film industry in the late 1920s, writing for silent films. He wrote for a number of films, including The Big House (1930), The Public Enemy (1931), and The Petrified Forest (1936). He also wrote for television, including episodes of The Twilight Zone and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Baker was married to actress Mary Astor from 1933 to 1941.
