Mercedes Ruehl is an American actress who has won both an Academy Award and a Tony Award. She is best known for her roles in the films The Fisher King, Lost in Yonkers, and The Birdcage. She has also appeared in television shows such as Law & Order and The Sopranos. Ruehl was born in Queens, New York City, and attended college at Hofstra University. She began her career in theater, appearing in productions such as The Shadow Box and The Marriage of Bette and Boo. She made her film debut in 1984's Swing Shift. Ruehl won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Fisher King in 1991. She also won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play for Lost in Yonkers in 1991. Her brother, American-Australian columnist and humorist Peter Ruehl, passed away suddenly on April 12, 2011. A respected journalist/columnist for the Australian Financial Review, the 64 year-old was survived by his Australian wife, and three children: Mercedes, John, and Tom.
