Michael Braungart is a German chemist and environmental scientist. He is best known for his work on the Cradle to Cradle design concept, which he developed with American architect William McDonough. Braungart is the founder and director of the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA) in Hamburg, Germany, and the co-founder of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC). Braungart was born in 1958 in Schwäbisch Gmünd, West Germany. He studied chemistry at the University of Hannover, where he received his doctorate in 1985. He then worked as a research scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Coal Research in Mülheim an der Ruhr. In 1995, Braungart co-founded the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA) in Hamburg, Germany. The agency works to promote sustainable production and consumption through the use of the Cradle to Cradle design concept. In 2002, Braungart co-founded McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC) with William McDonough. MBDC is a consulting firm that helps companies design products and processes that are safe for humans and the environment. Braungart is the author of several books, including Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things (2002) and The Upcycle: Beyond Sustainability—Designing for Abundance (2013). He has also written numerous articles and papers on the topics of sustainability and green chemistry. Braungart is a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the International Society for Industrial Ecology. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the German Environmental Award in 2004 and the German Sustainability Award in 2011.

In 1987, Dr. Braungart founded the EPEA Umweltforschung in Hamburg. At the heart of EPEA is Cradle to Cradle Design, to create products oriented toward a life-cycle economy.

After completing studies in Process Engineering in Darmstadt, Germany, Dr. Braungart went on to investigate the chemical processes of industrial production techniques with the Chemistry Department at Konstanz, Germany. He subsequently led the formation of the Chemistry Section of Greenpeace International. By the time he completed his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Hannover in 1985, he had assumed leadership of Greenpeace Chemistry.
