Michael Kvium is a Danish painter, sculptor, and installation artist. He is best known for his large-scale, often grotesque, figurative paintings. He has exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States, and his works are held in numerous public and private collections. Kvium was born in Horsens, Denmark, and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1975 to 1981. He has been a professor at the Academy since 1997. Kvium's works often feature distorted figures in surreal settings, often with a darkly humorous edge. His paintings often feature a combination of realism and abstraction, and he often uses a limited palette of colors. He has also created a number of sculptures and installations, often featuring figures in motion.
