Michael Nyman is a British composer, pianist, and musicologist. He is best known for his film scores, including The Piano (1993), Gattaca (1997), and The End of the Affair (1999). He has also composed numerous concert works, including the opera The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (1986). Nyman was born in Stratford, London, and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. He began his career as a musicologist, researching the works of early 20th century composers such as Erik Satie and Arnold Schoenberg. He later became a prolific composer, writing music for films, television, and the concert hall. Nyman has received numerous awards and honors, including an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music (1998), a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2003, and a knighthood in 2014. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from the University of York (2003) and the University of Oxford (2008).
