He then went on to appear in The Longest Yard, The Blues Brothers, and The Toy. In the 1980s, Purnell appeared in several television shows, including Hill Street Blues, The A-Team, and Miami Vice. He also had a recurring role in the sitcom 227. In the 1990s, Purnell appeared in the films The Five Heartbeats and The Preacher's Wife.
