Silverblatt was born in Queens, New York, on August 6, 1952. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a bachelor's degree in English literature. Silverblatt began his career in radio in the late 1970s, working as a producer and host for KCRW in Santa Monica, California. In 1989, he began hosting Bookworm, a weekly show featuring interviews with authors and discussions of their works. The show has been broadcast on KCRW and other public radio stations across the United States. Silverblatt has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Award for Excellence in Reviewing, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and the American Library Association's Alex Award.
