He is known for sharing his political views on Twitter, where he has over 150,000 followers, and for covering the riots associated with the 2020 George Floyd protests, which he claims were mostly ignored by other journalists.
Tracey has been critical of the Democrats and allegations of collusion between Donald Trump and Russia. In a March 2019 opinion piece for The New York Times, Ross Douthat described Tracey as one of the "strongest skeptics of the Russiagate narrative". However, Tracey has written that "the possibility [Trump] committed obstruction of justice by firing FBI director James Comey is real."
He joined The Young Turks in early 2017, however had left the group by mid-2018. He stated that his departure from the group was on amicable terms.
Tracey supported Bernie Sanders in the 2016 US Democratic primaries, and advocated "conscious abstention" in the 2016 presidential election. He has been highly critical of the Clintons (Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton). In 2020, Tracey supported Tulsi Gabbard's presidential campaign. He did not express a preference for Donald Trump or Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.
He has been described, in analysis of the contemporary media landscape in the late 2010s and early 2020s, as a "Left Heretic", alongside other journalists such as Lee Fang and Zaid Jilani. "Left Heretics" are defined as those who hail from the left of politics, but nonetheless are widely detested by mainstream leftists because they deviate from consensus on certain issues, notably freedom of speech and what can be construed as identity politics.
In February 2009, Tracey was arrested at The College of New Jersey after he attempted to approach Ann Coulter. He was charged with disorderly conduct and later pleaded guilty to "violating a nuisance ordinance."
