Mick Palmer is an Australian former police officer and public servant. He was born on 27 January 1953 in Perth, Western Australia. He is the former Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the former Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO). Mick Palmer was educated at the University of Western Australia, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1975. He then joined the Western Australia Police Force, where he served for 25 years, rising to the rank of Assistant Commissioner. In 2001, Mick Palmer was appointed Commissioner of the AFP, a position he held until 2005. During his tenure, he was responsible for the establishment of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee and the National Counter-Terrorism Plan. He also oversaw the introduction of the National Security Hotline and the National Security Information Network. In 2006, Mick Palmer was appointed Director-General of ASIO, a position he held until 2011. During his tenure, he was responsible for the introduction of the National Security Information Network and the National Security Hotline. Mick Palmer is currently the Chairman of the Australian Institute of Professional Intelligence Officers and a member of the Advisory Board of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.
