Milt Bernhart was an American jazz trombonist who was active in the 1950s and 1960s. He was born in Valparaiso, Indiana, and began playing trombone at the age of 12. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and then joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra in 1949. He was a featured soloist with the band and also recorded with them. In the 1950s, Bernhart became a sought-after session musician, playing on numerous film and television soundtracks. He was a member of the Wrecking Crew, a group of Los Angeles-based studio musicians who played on many hit records of the era. He also recorded with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and other jazz and pop stars. In addition to his work as a session musician, Bernhart also released several albums as a leader. His most successful album was The Trombone Sound of Milt Bernhart, which was released in 1959 and featured arrangements by Nelson Riddle. Bernhart continued to work as a session musician until his death in 2002. He was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 2004.

Milt did the famous trombone solo on "I've Got You Under My Skin" (January 12, 1956), considered the definitive Frank Sinatra tune. The album on which it was released, "Songs For Swingin' Lovers!", became the first LP to break into the Top 20 charts.

1944

Renowned big-band trombonist in the bands of Benny Goodman, Stan Kenton, Nelson Riddle, Andre Previn, John Williams, Henry Mancini and Ray Brown. He was orphaned at age 10, and then came to Chicago to live with relatives. His first studies were on the tuba, but he switched to trombone at age twelve. By age 16, he was already a member of the Boyd Raeburn band, booked at the former Bandbox in Chicago. In 1944 he was drafted into the US army, and had been ordered to Okinawa when an abrupt change transferred him instead into an Army band, a move later believed by his son as saving his life.
