Miriam Argüello is a Nicaraguan politician who served as the President of the Supreme Electoral Council of Nicaragua from 1990 to 1997. She was born on 22 February 1927 in Managua, Nicaragua. Argüello was a member of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and was a leader of the Nicaraguan Women's Movement. She was a member of the National Directorate of the FSLN from 1979 to 1990. In 1990, Argüello was appointed President of the Supreme Electoral Council of Nicaragua, a position she held until 1997. During her tenure, she oversaw the first free and fair elections in Nicaragua since the Sandinista Revolution in 1979. Argüello has been a vocal advocate for women's rights and has served on the board of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.
