Mohamed Tahar Fergani was an Algerian politician and diplomat who served as the Prime Minister of Algeria from 1979 to 1984. He was born in 1928 in the town of El-Kala, in the province of El-Taref, Algeria. Fergani was educated at the University of Algiers, where he studied law and political science. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer in Algiers. In 1962, he was appointed as the Minister of Justice in the government of Ahmed Ben Bella. He served in this position until 1965, when he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. In 1979, Fergani was appointed as the Prime Minister of Algeria. During his tenure, he was responsible for the implementation of a number of economic reforms, including the liberalization of the economy and the privatization of state-owned enterprises. He also oversaw the negotiation of the Algerian-Libyan Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. In 1984, Fergani resigned as Prime Minister and was succeeded by Mouloud Hamrouche. After leaving office, he served as the Algerian Ambassador to France from 1985 to 1988. Fergani died in Algiers in 2020 at the age of 88.
