Mona Charen is an American conservative columnist, author, and political commentator. She is a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center and a syndicated columnist for Creators Syndicate. She is a regular panelist on the syndicated political talk show "The McLaughlin Group" and a frequent guest on Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC.
Charen was born in New York City and raised in the Bronx. She graduated from Barnard College in 1979 and received a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1980. She began her career as a reporter for The Washington Star and later worked as a speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan.
Charen has written several books, including Useful Idiots: How Liberals Got It Wrong in the Cold War and Still Blame America First (2003), Do-Gooders: How Liberals Hurt Those They Claim to Help (and the Rest of Us) (2005), and Sex Matters: How Modern Feminism Lost Touch with Science, Love, and Common Sense (2018).
Charen is married to Robert Zelnick, a professor of journalism at Boston University. They have two children.

Charen was born in New York City and raised in Livingston, New Jersey, where she went to school with fellow journalist Ruth Marcus, starting "in fourth grade." She is Jewish. She received her B.A. degree with honors from Barnard College in 1979 and a J.D. degree from The George Washington University Law School in 1984.
