Myron Atkinson is a former American politician who served as the Governor of North Dakota from 1973 to 1981. He was born on September 22, 1927 in Bismarck, North Dakota. He attended the University of North Dakota and graduated with a degree in political science. Atkinson began his political career in the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1959. He was elected to the North Dakota Senate in 1965 and served as the Senate Majority Leader from 1969 to 1973. In 1972, he was elected Governor of North Dakota and served until 1981. Atkinson was a strong advocate for education and economic development in North Dakota. He was instrumental in the creation of the North Dakota State University System and the North Dakota University System. He also worked to improve the state's infrastructure and transportation system.
