Nadia Essayan is a French politician who was born on 6 June 1957 in Dimbokro, Côte d’Ivoire. She is the daughter of a French diplomat and a Côte d’Ivoirean mother. She was educated in France and obtained a degree in political science from the University of Paris. Essayan began her political career in the early 1990s, when she was elected to the French National Assembly in 1993. She was re-elected in 1997 and 2002. In 2002, she was appointed Minister of State for the Environment and Sustainable Development in the government of Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin. She held this position until 2004. In 2007, Essayan was elected to the European Parliament, where she served until 2014. During her time in the European Parliament, she was a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. Essayan is currently a member of the French Senate, representing the department of Val-de-Marne. She is also a member of the Senate's Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Armed Forces.
