Nanni Balestrini is an Italian writer, poet, and visual artist. He was born on 2 July 1935 in Milan, Lombardy, Italy. He is best known for his experimental poetry and his involvement in the Italian avant-garde movement of the 1960s. Balestrini studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan and began writing poetry in the 1950s. He was a member of the avant-garde group Gruppo 63, which was founded in 1963 and was active until the mid-1970s. He was also a member of the Italian Communist Party and was active in the student movement of the late 1960s. In the 1970s, Balestrini began to experiment with computer-generated poetry and visual art. He was a pioneer in the use of computers in the arts and was one of the first to use computers to create visual art. He has also written several novels, including The Unseen (1975) and The Robot (1977). Balestrini has received numerous awards for his work, including the Premio Viareggio in 1975 and the Premio Mondello in 1981. He is currently a professor of literature at the University of Milan.
